Mundaring Village Shopping Centre

This Project consisted of the construction of a 300 m2 addition to an existing shopping centre for a new retail outlet and major upgrades to the shopping centre carpark.

The shopping centre remained fully operational throughout the works therefore public safety the main priority throughout the project.

The building extension was constructed of structural steel and lightweight steel framing with the external façade clad in a combination of weatherboard lining and sandstone cladding to match the aesthetics of the existing shopping structure.

Whilst the outside was built to suit the heritage profile of the shopping centre, internally the new store had a modern look.

Initial works commenced with bulk excavation works for preparation of the building pad and retaining wall footings.

Due to the site being located in the Perth Hills, excavation was undertaken in clay and substantial rock. Whilst hard digging was unforeseen, works were completed with minimal impact on the construction program.

The new extension was positioned beside the main shopping centre road way and had to remain operational as much as possible due to anchor tenant requirements. This placed restrictions on accessible working space and use of EWP to construct works. This was addressed by erection of a full perimeter scaffold with several working decks at various heights to undertake works and lowered as each section was complete. During extension works, several car park upgrades were also undertaken. This included upgrades and widening of walkways, line marking the entire car park, installation of pedestrian walkways and new covered verandas. All works were staged and extensively managed to minimise disruption to the shopping centre.

Traffic management was utilised to ensure the process ran smoothly. Whilst these works were undertaken it was identified some stormwater drains and pipework were blocked or broken, which were all replaced with no impact on the project timeframe.

Good planning and organisation was required to stages works accordingly to minimise disruption to the shopping centre.

Ongoing communication between the superintendent, centre management and The Slatter Group WA was critical to ensure the successful delivery of the project on time for the proposed retailer to commence trading for the Christmas period.
