The Kirby Swim 650m2 indoor aquatic complex in Erskine comprised a pool deck, reception area, change and ablutions facilities, offices and staff rooms, viewing, plant and first aid rooms, a service yard and car park.

The project involved the construction of the pool shell, cast in situ footings and slabs, tilt-up concrete panels and structural steel erection. We used sandwich-panelled, custom orb roof sheeting, external CFC cladding, acoustic tile ceilings and a vinyl, spiral duct gas heating system. We applied a textured coat finish to the external tilt panels and CFC cladding with intricate joint patterns.

We painted the internal walls and applied full-height wall tiles to the amenities areas. Intricate, feature colour banding was applied to the walls and floors and coloured concrete to the pool concourse. We plastered the pool with coloured tile bands to mark out the lanes.

To reduce noise levels for patrons and staff, we affixed acoustic ceiling tiles into the dampolan skylight layout above the pool and used perforated gyprock in the reception area.

This project required the construction of the building around the pool shell. We used insulated wall panels and upgraded the material and paint specifications to withstand the chlorine environment and close proximity to the ocean. We installed a vinyl heating duct and feature acoustic grid ceiling.

The site was adjacent to a busy shopping centre, demanding very careful project management and traffic management expertise. We utilised a 150m common service trench through a busy Coles loading area. The project was completed within the 30-week time frame and was nominated for the Master Builders Awards 2009.
